(From
the Boston Globe OnLine): Is Madonna's New Gig for the Gap her Next
Savvy Reinvention or a Gasp of Desperation From an Irrelevant Artist?
http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/208/living/Clothing_actP.shtml
By Joan Anderman,
Globe Staff, 7/27/2003
Excerpts:
The Gap-Madonna union is
all about the bedding down of commerce and celebrity. It's about
cross-marketing in a culture
that consumes super-stardom and new jeans with roughly the same zeal.
Gap representatives aren't talking, but early word has it the television
ads will feature Madonna performing her recent single ''Hollywood''
(which tanked at radio) and hip-hop star Missy Elliott singing Madge's
1985 hit ''Into the Groove'' (lest we forget the potentially lucrative
back catalog). It's plain old good business.
And yet the union of Gap
and Madonna is as depressing as it is ingenious. It's never pretty
watching an iconic pop figure fade, especially when it involves (and
it usually does) selling somebody else's product.
. . . ''It seems like a sympton
of desperation,'' says Camille Paglia, professor of humanities and
media studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. ''`Swept
Away' [Madonna's last film] was a disaster, `American Life' [her last
album] was a disaster. Maybe being happy in her personal life, as
a wife and mother, is putting her in a creative drought. She's lapsed,
her presence is receding, and she's facing the dilemma of the aging
star. This is a shrewd decision on her part.''
. . . . For the cover of
the September issue of Harper's Bazaar, which hits newsstands Aug.
12, Madonna strikes a serene pose in a ribbed white tank and blue
low-rise cords. She gussies it up with what appears to be $10 million
in diamond jewelry.

Madonna
and the Children
(Regarding
the 2003 Music Television Video Music Awards where Madonna kissed Britney
Spears and Christina Aguilera)
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=34434
by Michelle Malkin
Excerpt:
The open-mouthed kisses
between aging pop star Madonna and 15th-minute celebrity clingers
Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, broadcast on MTV last week,
received widespread media attention. The Sapphic spectacle was rightly
condemned as vulgar, cynical and desperately pathetic.
But the commentariat missed
the real horror.
Up on stage for the raunchy
performance of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was 6-year-old
Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon. Little Lourdes was dressed in First Communion
white, decked out in lace gloves, a crucifix and a studded belt with
the words "BOY TOY." Paving the way for the entrance of
Madonna and her entourage of sexual exhibitionists, Lourdes tossed
flower petals on the dance floor while a mosh pit of fans writhed
in front of her and the porno soundtrack throbbed behind her.

Desperate
Madonna Asks Fans To Promote New Single

Excerpts:
The Scottish Daily Record
reports Madonna is employing fans as salesmen to flog her new single
'American Life'. Fans are urged to join The Madonna Project to sell
the digital version of the single in return for credit and prizes.
Warner Bros record company
bosses say on their website: "The Madonna Project will revolutionize
how music is distributed on the internet. It's also going to revolutionize
the amount of cool Madonna prizes you have in your house. We're going
to make it worth your while."

The multi-millionairess
[Madonna] is so desperate for American Life to be a hit, she is encouraging
people to promote it for her on the internet.
. . . Fans are urged to join

Of course, Madge benefits
financially and, possibly, chartwise. But American Life has been mauled
by the critics.

Is
Madonna a Copy Cat?
(Plagerism and Ray
of Light Music Video)
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/newsarticle.asp?nid=4754
from Rolling Stone
magazine
Excerpt:
Italian director Stefano
Salvati is claiming that Madonna's "Ray of Light" video
was stolen from a clip he shot in 1994 for local pop star Biagio Antonacci.
Antonacci's lawyer, Gianni Massaro, said Friday that he will ask Madonna's
Maverick Records to pull the "Ray of Light" video from distribution
and that he will seek damages.
Salvati, who lives part of
the year in Los Angeles, claims that his manager had sent copies of
his videos to Maverick before "Ray of Light" was shot. A
Salvati video for a song titled "Non e Mai Stato Subito"
features Antonacci performing at normal speed against a backdrop of
fast-moving images of clouds, traffic and food, somewhat like Madonna
in the "Ray of Light" clip directed by Joanis Akerlund.

Madonna
Weds - Jesus Not Invited
http://www.landoverbaptist.org/news0101/madonna.html
This is from a site
that parodies hyper, ultra Christian fundamentalists -- they're trying
to be tongue- in- cheek, but their spoof article actually tells it like
it as, as far as Madonna's immoral, trashy public and private behavior
is concerned:
Jerry Falwell has wisely
predicted the anti-Christ will be a Jew. After all, the race that
killed Jesus will undoubtedly be the race that produces the man who
will take the majority of the world to Hell. But there is another
figure described in the Great Book of Revelation who has walked among
mortals for decades (not to mention, slept with thousands of them).
You can call her "Material Girl" or "Vogue Queen,"
but her real title remains the same – The Great Whore of Babylon.

Tatu
Out Madonnas Madonna
http://www.moviecall.org/updates/index.php?article=867
Excerpts:
After collaborating on a
parade of books, videos and movies on the subject, people finally
stopped caring. Around this time [Madonna] played herself in the horror
film Truth or Dare. The film was shot in black and white
because, according to director Alek Keshishian, "It made it easier
to hide her zits."
Indifference to [Madonna]swelled
through the 90's until she magically duped her entire fan base into
thinking that she somehow transformed herself into a new cutting edge
electronic artist. At that time (1998) there wasn't anything particularly
new about what she was doing.
Apparently Madonna's fans
hadn't noticed what Bjork had been up to since 1993 but it's probably
asking too much for Madonna fans to pay attention to anything but
Madonna. What Ray of Light provided more than anything else was a
reason for her fanbase to think she was cool again.
. . . . [Regarding] Tatu
the teenage Russian lesbian duo. How can someone who built their career
around tiptoe-ing on taboos [as Madonna has done] compete with a two
headed monster like that? Whether or not you believe they're lesbians,
one would have to believe their goal (or more accurately their producer,
Ivan Shapovalov's goal) is to stomp up the ladder with little tantilizing
acts and scandals in much the same way Madonna did.

Madonna:
Icon of Postmodernity, Jock McGregor
http://www.facingthechallenge.org/madonna.htm
Includes wonderful
quotes and observations, such as
The New York Post
columnist Ray Kerrison said this about her [Madonna]:
She will do anything, say anything, wear anything, mock anything,
degrade anything to draw attention to herself and make a buck. She
is the quintessential symbol of the age; self indulgent, sacrilegious,
shameless, hollow.
.... In postmodern society
any authority, any framework, any dogma, that claims a base in absolutes
is automatically subject to ridicule and subversion.
.... She [Madonna] has said:
Sometimes I feel guilty
because I like travel through people. ...You take what you can and
then move on.
Nietzsche said God is dead,
we only have ourselves. The result has been the steady disintegration
of Truth, the fragmentation of our Culture into the meaninglessness
of postmodernism, and ultimately the loss of our very selves.
But God is not dead. He
is alive and he has revealed himself in Jesus Christ. Christianity
is not a Philosophy, a clever metaphysical framework designed by people
to explain the unknown.
Christianity is not even
a Religion, an intricate system of rituals developed to give emotional
comfort. Christianity is Historical Truth. In the Bible God has spoken
an objective Word. In Jesus, God has entered history. A concrete event
in Time and Space.
Postmodernism is about Images.
Christianity is about Reality...

Excerpts:
She has burned crosses, masturbated
on her Blond Ambition tour and openly admits to having affairs with
women.
Thomas Leitch, professor
of English, says, "Madonna is a woman who is in a person's face
so much, who is so over powering, that after a while her negatives
add up."
He says he does not feel
her impact is as great on people today as it used to be because her
image has died out as a sexual icon, and people are bored with her.
Junior Michael Mandato agrees.
"I haven't really paid much attention to her." He
adds that the recent birth of her daughter has decreased her sex appeal,
he says.
"That and she's getting
old," he says.
... At the beginning of her
career, she appeared on "American Bandstand" claiming that
she would "rule the world."

Madonna's
Twisted Values:
The
Pop Princess gets American materialism all wrong, By Brian Doherty (April
24, 2003)
http://reason.com/links/links042403.shtml
Excerpt:
Madonna's take on what's
wrong with American values is as misguided, alas, as her decision
to release the "Justify My Love" video. This latest calculated
outburst falls in a long line of statements and gestures from the
pop princess misreading the American psyche.
She operated for the first
half of her career, for example, under the delusion that there was
some sort of puritanical impulse dominating the contemporary American
mind, and that we needed her help to break it down. We can assume
she is sincere, if only because we know what a bad actress she is.

Vertu is the brainchild of

New

Old, March 31, 2003 (the Abstract Version)

NOTE: I have the

comments below. The rest of the article was either neutral or actually
(gag!) favorable.
Excerpts:
This is how the music world
is changing: Madonna, who has been a pop diva for two decades, may
be looking at the final stages of a long career.
She crashed and burned last
year in the movie ''Swept Away,'' a project with her husband, Guy
Ritchie, who directed the film. And her most recent albums, with their
underground European techno beats, have failed to capture audiences
anywhere near the size of those that bought her earlier albums. She
has sold about $200 million in CD's and other products throughout
her 20-year career.
...But it has been so long
since Madonna has had a hit that radio stations are wondering if listeners
want to hear her new material.
''Radio is still searching
for her relevance,'' said Robert P. Burke, vice president and managing
director at Friday Morning Quarterback, a radio trade publication.

... or another flight, Madonna

What mattered on this particular charter were the rules.
Rule Number One: Only three

Rule Number Two: Only one

Rule Number Three: She insisted

Madonna
said what?
http://www.observationdeck.org/katiskorner/justatheory/madonna.html
By Kathleen Stephens-Hawke
Excerpts:
Did I miss something? When
did Madonna become the Queen of morals? Or is the Queen of sleaze just
looking for a little “Suzy Homemaker” type publicity?
In Australia, this story appeared
in the Herald Sun News Paper on Friday 8th of November 2002.
MADONNA has demanded higher
standards of decency on TV after a US station broadcast footage of
a mother breast-feeding her eight-year-old son.
The singer who is famed for
her controversial videos, said she was outraged the image was shown
to millions of viewers on Good Morning America.
”People have no morals,
I swear to God, “she said. “The things that people do
for ratings”.
Lynn Stuckey, 34 of Illinois,
gained notoriety after ABC ran the tape in July.
A judge has since ordered
child welfare officials to investigate.
Mother-of-two Madonna, 44
said the TV station should never have aired the footage.
”Why is there a tape
of it? It’s terrible. That child will never recover,”
she said.
Even though I agree 100% with
what she said I still haven’t stopped laughing because of Madonna
saying it. Now Madonna can add hypocrite to her dossier. It surprises
me she didn’t choke on those words.
For Madonna to say, “people
have no morals” would be to say the least the pot calling the
kettle black! Madonna has always been proud to shock the world with
her lack of morals while telling us to “lighten up”.
. . . Isn’t it amazing
how these stars have no problem destroying the morals we try to teach
our children so they can become rich and famous. But then they are the
ones who scream the loudest when they become parents and have their
children being raised in the aftermath of their actions. If people have
no morals today, then maybe Madonna shouldn’t look any farther
than her own mirror when she is looking for somebody to blame.
I’m not hypocrite; I’ll
tell you that I was a Madonna fan in the beginning. But lost interest
fast when I felt she was getting a bit too sick and twisted.
